Nagpal, Mrs Shubhangini Raje Gaekwad, Dr. Pradeep Sheth, Shri S. K. Gandhi (right to left). A nearly similar service ethos continues at NETRA.

Refractive Errors

Having glasses DOES NOT mean weak eyes, a common myth! An eye can be longer (Myopia, requiring Minus glasses), Shorter (Hypermetropia, requiring Plus glasses) or differently curved (Astigmatism, requiring Cylindrical glasses)

It is most neglected & often managed by untrained persons by so called automatic machines, leading to faulty glasses & causing significant visual strain & disability in daily activities. Retinoscopy is the best method to assess glasses and is best done by an Ophthalmologist or an Optometrist.

Squinted eyes & Amblyopia

Should be attended at earliest possible age; it cannot correct itself with time; waiting may lead to one eye staying weak for life.

All children must have their vision screened around 3 yrs of age

Retinal Diseases

Retinal Detachment, Age related Macular Degeneration (ARMD), Macular Hole, Macular swelling, Retinopathy of Prematurity (in Prematurely born underweight babies) etc

Treating a retinal hole by Cryo or LASER can prevent Retinal Detachment. Sudden appearance of dancing black spots or seeing flashes of light point to possibility of Retinal hole formation.See eye doctor immediately for preventive treatment.

Eating green, yellow & red vegetables or fruits since early life prevents Age Related macular Degeneration

Retinal Vein Occlusion

Corneal Diseases

Caused by poor nutrition, injuries (by pointed objects like pencils, fire crackers, industrial accidents, cricket ball etc), infections (by splashing unsafe water in eyes routinely, improper contact lens use) etc.

Opaque Cornea Replaced by corneal Grafting

pterygium Removal From Cornea

Surgical Complications

Although an inbuilt risk in any surgical procedure, sometimes it is caused by taking operative & postoperative care lightly & performing operations in bulk numbers needlessly

Post Operative infection

Cornea swelling months after cataract operation

Ocular Injuries (Trauma)

Eye injuries form a large part (10-15%) of eye diseases and occur from various causes like Play ( Cricket ball, Shuttle cock, Fire crackers, fingers, hands, pointed objects like pencils etc.), Industrial accidents, Chemical splashes during washing/painting walls, Road traffic accidents, fights, etc.

Monitoring playing children, using safety devices for industrial work, being careful, safe driving etc. go a long way in preventing many of these.

Insect Foreign body

Eye Injury causing Cataract & Iris Tear

Eye's Intelligence - Facts & Myths

DO NOT choose your doctor by his fees, availability of cashless services, advertisements of free check ups etc.
"A CHEAP MEDICAL SERVICE MAY PROVE TO BE VERY COSTLY IN THE LONG RUN".

  • Eye Numbers(Glasses)

Eye numbers do not go away by wearing spactacles or come by not wearning spectacles or reduce by wearing contact lenses. Changes in numbers can occur in diffrerent life stages and is not a matter of worry.

  • Steps to Healthy Eyes

For keeping your eyes healthy it is recommnended to live a physically active life and have a healthy diet.No special eye exercises are needed.

Protecting eyes from sun by a cap and from wind, dust and industrial risks by sun glasses/safety goggles is a very effective way of preventing injury or damage to the eyes.

  • There is no evidence that sitting close to the television will damage your eyes. So sit wherever you are most comfortable. However always going too close to watch TV may indicate possibility of having glasses. Eyes may become tired if the light in the room is too dim, or if the picture screen is out of focus.

Computer users should ensure blinking of eyes 10-16 times/minute. Stay off the monitor for 2 minutes for every 20 minutes of work. No special drops, glasses or screen are required.

There are no eye drops which can make eyes stronger, whiter, remove eye strain or prevent cataract. ln healthy state, no medicines or treatment are required.

  • Technology is always advancing. Some advancement turn out useful; other not. Not every new or expensive technique is better than the existing one. All new developments need test of time before validation or rejection. Technology helps but cannot replace knowledge, skill, experience and insight.

  • There is no medical procedure without inherent risks. Medical science deals with life which has infinite variability. Patients and community will benefit most by understanding and accepting scope and limitations of medical interventions.

Eye surgeries can be done in all seasons - not just winter

Conjunctivitis spreads by air, touch or using common objects like napkins, kajal etc. which are already infected and not by looking at a person who has conjunctivitis.

  • Chemical splashed In Eyes: Wash the eye with drinking water or sterile saline solution before wasting any time.Take the patient to doctor after this step. Chemical processes companies should keep saline bottles in First Aid box.
    Eye Injuries:
    1) DO NOT put anything in eye. DO NOT press the eye. Protect the eye with any glasses & take the patient to a Doctor(Eye doctor if possible) immediately
    2) If there is a pain give pain killing tablet like Paracetamol.
Sudden loss of vision : Take the patient to an EYE doctor immediately
